Take Flight, a Dyslexia intervention program which was developed here in Dallas, TX by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, is a comprehensive, ungraded, structured, and sequential curriculum that utilizes multisensory techniques for basic instruction in reading, writing, and spelling.
St. Patrick utilizes the Take Flight curriculum to further support students in 1st through 4th grades who have been diagnosed with Dyslexia or other language-based learning differences. Take Flight focuses on the five components of effective reading instruction which are: phonic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. This guided, repeated practice enables the child to apply what they have learned efficiently.
St. Patrick Catholic School has a full-time Take Flight instructor on staff who is specially trained to work with students with dyslexia and related language-based learning differences. Take Flight occurs in a small group setting where the instructor can provide more individualized lessons when necessary.
