WELCOME to SPS Music/Choirs! I am Kristi Kerian, K-6 general music teacher and 7-8 Middle School Choir director at St. Patrick. My goal for each student is to learn to LOVE music of all genres and to have fun and feel comfortable participating in music in some fashion. Why do we need to learn to sing? “So that we can sing Happy Birthday in tune at parties, feel comfortable singing a baby to sleep, know when you are hearing a great performance, and most importantly to raise your voice in joyful gratitude and praise to God the Father every time we participate in mass.”
I was raised on a farm in North Dakota…brrrr! I graduated summa cum laude with my B.S. Ed. Degree from the University of North Dakota (the other UND!) in 1979, with a double major in Elementary General Education and Elementary Music Education. My first job was teaching Music, PE, and 6th Grade Reading and Language Arts! I have also previously taught music in Casper, WY and Denver, CO, before homeschooling for six years. This is my 19th year of teaching music at St. Patrick. This is also my 25rd year of directing the St. Patrick Church Children’s Choir. I was humbled and honored to receive the Work of Heart award from the Catholic Foundation in 2007.
During my free time, I enjoy riding on the back of Rob’s (my sweetheart of 32 years) Honda Goldwing. I also love spending time with our two beautiful daughters, Katie (special ed teacher at Notre Dame School of Dallas) and Claire (works in legal marketing in Dallas). My favorite hobbies are reading, playing flute, dancing, cantoring at mass, and traveling.
I look forward to a fun year of music making with your children!
